İstanbul Kültür University

Istanbul Kültür University is a Foundation University with a public entity, which was established on 15 July 1997 in accordance with the Law Numbered 4281. The university offers education as per the Higher Education Law numbered 2547 and it owns all of the rights and privileges of a state university.

State of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Nation can reach the permanent target of ‘exceeding modern civilization level’ only by ensuring that the youth receives qualified education whatever the stage is. In this regard, the main purpose of the Istanbul Kültür University offers Quality Higher Education.

Problems in offering quality education, as well as their relevant solution methods are not new for people working at IKU. Since IKU was established by a foundation where educators who have successfully been dealing with education since the 1930s.The university is administrated by a Board of Trustees with experienced people with the qualifications of educators.
Chairman and members of the Board of Trustees spent years for school organizations at all stages of education from kindergarten to higher education, and thereby proved their success in the education sector. As they know that quality can only be reached with the perfect physical environment and selected, experienced and creative education staff, they have always considered these issues as very important.

Offices, classrooms and laboratories of the buildings which are located in Şirinevler Campus in City University type were constructed and equipped meticulously. In addition to Şirinevler Campus, Ataköy Campus was put into service in the 2004-2005 academic year, which has a total area of 65.000 m2, of which 40.000 m2 is indoors and 25.000 m2 is outdoors. In addition to the halls where scientific, social and cultural events are conducted, this campus also has a sports complex. A new campus with an area of 6000 m2 was established for students at the Vocational High Schools in the 2009-2010 Academic year.

Instructors

Academic staff of IKU consist of selected, efficient and creative instructors. Thanks to the academic personnel, IKU was listed in the first half among the universities in 1998 when the number of publications per instructor in the famous scientific journals determined by the evaluation commission appointed by Interuniversity Board were taken into consideration.
The university was listed among the top ten universities in 1999, despite being a new organization.
Our target is to list our university in the leading three universities, which ranks the 4th among the foundation universities and ranks the 6th among the public universities.

IKU sustained this success consistently. Following inspections and evaluations conducted by YÖK, the university became entitled to state support in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

At IKU, programs are implemented in order to improve the abilities of students, help them gain discussion and such abilities, encourage students to gain habits of criticizing and thinking. We guide our students towards the vision of becoming professionals or researchers who have competing ability at an international level with the motivation of learning to produce information. Furthermore, our prerequisite is that an IKU graduate must have knowledge of English and computer skills whatever his/her department or program is.

Faculties

In 2009-2010 Academic year, 6797 students received education in 3 the doctorate and 28 postgraduate programs within two institutes and 17 programs of three vocational high schools and 20 departments within six faculties of IKU. Total 570 instructors lectured; 367 of which are full-time instructors, while 213 of them are hourly based. The rate of student/instructor is 11 at our university. Courses and practices are conducted in small groups, by ensuring the active involvement of students.
24,4% of our students are placed by ÖSYM on scholarship programs. In addition, full scholarship, monthly and cash aid scholarship have been provided to 35% of students, which means that two out of every three students hold scholarship at our university.

First associate degree and post graduates received their degrees in 1998-1999, while the the first bachelor degree graduates received their degrees in the 2000-2001 Academic year. All of our graduates began to work successfully and most of our associate degree graduates applied for bachelor degree programs via vertical transfer.
We would like to emphasize the fact that rules which re-regulate bachelor degree completion and put into effect in the 1999-2000 Academic year offers wide opportunities to the students with the required skills.
